Cancelled
Deuteronomy 15.1 At the end of every seven years you must
cancel debts. 2 This is how it is to be done: Every creditor
shall cancel the loan he has made to his fellow Israelite. He
shall not require payment from his fellow Israelite or brother,
because the LORD's time for canceling debts has been proclaimed.
3 You may require payment from a foreigner, but you must cancel
any debt your brother owes you. 4 However, there should be no
poor among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you
to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you, 5 if
only you fully obey the LORD your God and are careful to follow
all these commands I am giving you today. 6 For the LORD your
God will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many
nations but will borrow from none. You will rule over many nations
but none will rule over you.
This helps us to understand, "Forgive us our debts, as
we also have forgiven our debtors" (Matthew 6.12).
Debt was automatically cancelled. When we look at the grand
provisions of the gospel, we are impressed with the ultimate
expression of this principle:
Hebrews 8.12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will
remember their sins no more.
While we may cancel/forgive a debt, we are grateful that our
Father promises to do more. By the power of Christ's blood, He
cancels the sins and His memory of the sins. We can stand before
God as holy people because of what Christ has done.
Dear Father, we are so grateful for the forgiveness we have
in Christ. You have provided the way for us to be holy and we
want to live holy lives in your presence each day. Help us to
do this. Help those who are hurting. We ask this in the name
of Christ, our Redeemer. Amen.
